Florals for Fall? Yes please!!

It's a common assumption that floral prints are for spring and summer seasons only, but that's definitely not the case.  Florals are a good idea anytime of the year! To do florals right for the fall, what you want to look for, are floral prints with some darker hues.  Either a bright floral print on a black background (like my dress below, from Forever 21), or a print that uses richer colours, like burgundies and deep greens, mixed with cream.

When you incorporate the richer, darker colours into the floral pattern, it's completely season appropriate and right on trend!

Accesorizing the right way.. for you!

When it comes to accessories, I tend to stick with the "less is more" rule.  I definitely admire the women who can make an arm full of bangles look effortless or those who can wear 5 different necklaces layered perfectly together with no tangles!  I love the look, but it's just not for me.

I've pretty much come up with an accessories formula that works for me.  I tend to wear a statement ring on my right hand, something that stands out due to the colour, style or size.  On my wrists, I go with a watch on my left, and some bracelets on my right (3 or 4 max).  As for necklaces, I usually stick to 1, either a short or long one, but I have also worn both for a layered look.  On the earring front, I'm pretty boring, same studs 99% of the time.  And that seems to be my accessory uniform.

Necklace and ring from H&M

Up until recently, I've been more of a silver girl, but lately I've been warming up to gold and even mixing the two.  Add in some beads and bling, and that's my jewelry stock.  Because I change it up daily, I don't spend a lot on my jewelry (Tiffany is for special occasions only!! LOL).  I'll buy from H&M, Forever 21, Stella & Dot... anywhere really, as long as it catches my eye, and doesn't break the budget.

I'm also big on scraves and love love love the oversize, shawl-type ones (even though my husband thinks they're blankets!).  They're so cozy and just tossing them on can complete an outfit.

What's your accessory uniform?  I'd love to hear how you all rock your accessories!

Its (almost) time to transition!!

I spent the last few days going through my kids' closets to get them back-to-school ready!  After an amazing spring and summer spent in shorts and t-shirts, it was a shock to see that they had outgrown a majority of their jeans and long-sleeved tops!
I decided to keep it going with my closet too, and began the transition process (Thankfully I haven't outgrown any of my clothes! HA!).  Just like my kids have been living in shorts, I've been doing the same in dresses/rompers/shorts.  During the summer, its so nice not to have to worry about outerwear, and even better to be able to go bare legs!  (A lot of work places even relax their dress codes to allow for bare legs in the office).

But now that the seasons are about to change, it's time to look at how I can wear some of my favorite pieces as the weather gets cooler.  My love affair with dresses doesn't end after summer, not at all!  Tights are my go-to during the fall and winter months.  I tend to stick to basic black as they compliment the majority of my wardrobe.  But I do have varying thicknesses, ranging form sheer to opaque, depending on the look I want to go for.
Coloured or printed tights are also big these days, and they're great to create a more relaxed, playful look.  Polka dots, stripes, Aztec prints... have fun pairing them with a solid coloured dress or skirt, or even a complimentary pattern.
Layering is another way to transition your summer clothes into fall and winter.  Bringing out the blazers and cardigans and scarves that have gone into hiding the past few months, and putting them to work will help you take your summer wardrobe further.

For instance this dress will be winter-ready with a pair of semi-sheer tights, black or grey ankle boots, and a slouchy blazer!

Just remember, not everything you've been wearing the past few months can be transitioned into fall wear... if it's meant to be beach wear, let it remain beach-wear!

Putting a label on your style... easier said than done??

How would you describe your style?  It's a question I've heard celebs being asked many times, and I often wonder how I would answer that question.  And I really don't think I could answer it in one word... or even 5 words!!
I feel like I have different styles to fit into the different facets of my life.  I go for a casual, functional look when its family time.  I switch to a sophisticated feminine look for work, and when (not often!) its time for a night out, I tend to go a little edgier.

I like mixing different looks, so combining the girly tulle with the chambray shirt works for me!

I like to look a little unexpected; that something different, is what sets us all apart from each other.  We all prefer specific colours or silhouettes, different fabrics and cuts, and that's what makes fashion fun.  If you try to wear what you think you "should" wear just cuz its trendy and everyone else is wearing it, but you're just not feeling it, it'll show.
Almost anything goes these days, and as long as you feel confident and you feel like yourself, then you're probably going to rock that look, so go for it!!

Bring it on!!

I know its difficult saying goodbye to the leisurely days and warm temps of summer (and we don't have to quite yet!) but I choose to focus on all the fun fall fashion we get to wear (believe me, it takes the sting out of summer ending).

There's something about this time of year that feels like a fresh start.  Even though I haven't personally been a part of the whole "back to school" thing for a looooonng time, I sure would love to partake in some "back to school" shopping for myself... does it count if my kids are going back? ;)

After a summer of wearing dresses and sandals and flip flops on repeat, I'm kinda looking forward to wearing boots, and scarves, and sweaters!
And this year for the fall, the whole 70s thing is still BIG!  Think flare leg jeans or pants, funky patterns and colors (brown is big--- not quite sure how I feel about that :|).
Also chunky sweaters for fall, wear them fitted or oversized, just be sure to balance the bottom; for example, if you're going for an oversized fit, pair it with skinnies and ankle boots.

Now I'm not one to get into trends too much.  If there's one that really speaks to me, I'll likely give it a try.  But for the most part, I stick to what I like and what looks good on me.  What will I be buying?  Definitely a long sleeveless vest (been eyeing that trend for awhile), a slouch trench, and I think I'll be pulling out some of those flares jeans I have tucked away!

Have fun with choosing some new fall pieces for your closet!!

Culottes- love 'em or hate 'em?

When I first saw that culottes were coming back for the spring/summer season, I was equal parts excited and skeptical!  Excited because I do love a fun trend, and will try almost anything, but skeptical because I wasn't so sure how wearing the culotte would be perceived in my world.

In magazines, on the models and celebs who I first saw them on, they looked fabulous, so I put the skepticism aside and began my hunt for the perfect pair.   And boy did I have to hunt!  In the early months of this year, when I walked into a store and asked if they had culottes, the salespeople looked confused!  I went to all my usual haunts, but found nothing until I finally found this great black pair at Ross of all places (told ya, you never know where you're gonna find what you're looking for!)

Once I had them in hand (or in closet), it then became a matter of working up the courage to wear them in public.  No one I knew was rocking the trend yet (some were as confused as the salesgirls!), but I figured I may as well go for it, and I'm so glad I did!  They are super comfy, and a great alternative to a midi-length skirt.

And if anyone's confused as to what I'm wearing, they haven't told me!

These ones are a little longer than I'd like (since I'm on the shorter side), but pairing them with nude heels creates a taller look.

When to $ave and when to $$$plurge

Its no secret that I like myself a good deal, I mean who doesn't?!  I've actually been known to walk away from a dress or top because $30 is too much!  But that's not to say that I haven't made some pricier purchases over the years, because I definitely have.  Its just a matter of knowing what items you should spend more on and what items you shouldn't.  And those items will probably differ from person to person because we all have different styles and different needs.

For instance, someone who doesn't like carrying a purse/bag (DEFINITELY not me!), probably wouldn't (or shouldn't) spend big bucks on a designer bag, whereas someone like me who has an obsession with purses and bags, would.

The basic rule is to generally spend more on the pieces you plan to wear or use often, such as purses, bags, shoes or outerwear.  These are items that will get used more often, hence why getting higher quality (which usually equals higher prices) is worth it.  It might have a steep price tag, but you're "price per use" will be lower the more you wear/use it.

For items that aren't basics in your closet, especially if you're trying out a "trend", its almost always a good idea to look for lower priced versions, so you can get your fix, but not feel bad if you only wear it once.

Scrolling through many style blogs or Instagram style accounts, you'll see a lot of "mixing" of high end designer items and lower priced items.  Even celebs do it; its not uncommon these days to see a well known celeb sporting an item from say Forever 21, and accessorizing with a pair of designer shoes and killer jewellery.
And that's something you can do as well:  if there's an amazing purse you have your sights set on (I have like 5 on my radar) or a pair of pricey shoes that you know you'll have on repeat, go for it.  Pair them with a fun dress from H&M or jeggings and long flowy tunic top from Forever 21, and you'll have a perfect high/low look!

It just spoke to me!

It really did!  I walked into Aeropostale with intentions of buying a gift (for someone much younger than I), but when I saw this I knew I would be leaving with more than just the gift!

Under $30 on sale!!

It can be worn so many different ways: to dress up a casual outfit, like a plain white T, denim skinnies and boots; or to add edge to a girly outfit, like a baby doll dress and sandals; or just as a finishing touch, like over a fitted sweater dress and high boots.

I'm so looking forward to incorporating it into my wardrobe!

PS: Like I said before, you never know where you're going to find something!  Any store is worth checking out ;)

Maxi-dress = maxi-style!!

When in doubt, a maxi-dress is always a great choice!

For those days when you didn't plan the outfit ahead of time or when you did plan the outfit in your head but it just didn't work out in reality (happens too often!), a maxi-dress is your answer.  Its an all-in-one outfit-- no need to try and match a top and bottom, just throw it on and add some accessories and you're out the door!
I got this beauty at the Gap Factory Store, and it fits amazingly!  It was on sale, and I got it for under $30!

The LWD

We all know the LBD (little black dress) is a go-to for formal occasions, but during the summer months, it can feel too harsh.  Enter the LWD (little white dress)... it is the perfect alternative to the LBD when the sun is shining and the days are longer.

I found this gorgeous LWD at Nordstrom Rack for under $20!

The eyelet bodice adds a little something to an otherwise plain dress.  With some layered necklaces, and my jade bracelet, it's an easy, fresh look for the summer.

What to wear when its SO hot outside!

There's something about the sweltering heat that almost makes you want to put fashion on the back burner, and just wear whatever is light and comfortable (usually an old tank top and shorts!)... but what if you have to show a little more style, whether it's for work or a lunch date?

There's a way to look good, and keep cool, and it comes in the form of a gorgeous A-line dress.  A-line is a great shape for the summer because it just skims the body, there's nothing tight or restricting about it, and that is a huge plus when you're trying to beat the heat.

Choose one in a fun pattern, or add some stand-out accessories like I did, and you've got yourself a go-to hot weather look!

This dress is from TJ Maxx, and I picked it up for only $14.99!!

The newest addition!

Every so often you see something that you didn't even know you were looking for until you see it.. that was the case when I saw these shoes!
$36 on sale at Old Navy

I had no intentions of buying new ankle boots;  I was (am still) looking for new black boots, but then I saw these and I knew I needed them in my life.

They're a great, versatile pair of boots, and I'm sure I'll be wearing them often in the coming weeks.  I plan on wearing them with dark denim or black skinnies in the fall, but also with casual dresses as we transition from the warmer summer weather to the cooler temps of fall.  Gotta say, I'm looking forward to it!

Where did you get that?

Its a question I get ALL the time!  And the answer is often surprising.  I'm not one to discriminate when it comes to where I shop because you really have no idea what you can find in the most unexpected places!

I will truly shop just about anywhere; I do shop at the usual suspects (H&M, Forever21), but I also definitely like shopping at places that may not necessarily have a stylish reputation, and I have made some great finds at the most random places.  I have a dress that I'm always complimented on and it was $12 from Walmart!  Now you're not always going to score something great there, but every so often you'll find something that surprises you!

So don't stop yourself from shopping at stores you may not usually go to, sometimes going off the beaten path can result in a great find and a great deal!

I got this patterned dress from TJ Maxx, and it's a big hit!

Time to get "Style_iish"!!

So here it is, my inaugural post.  It's been a long time coming in many ways, and now I'm so happy to introduce Style-iish, a place where I can share my love of fashion and the amazing deals I come across.
Shopping, scoring great deals and putting outfits together is something I've always enjoyed.  And although I've definitely had some cringe-worthy fashion moments (haven't we all!), I'm constantly asked where I get my clothes and complimented on what I'm wearing.  And now I can share it all with you!  The whole idea behind Style_iish is to show how easy it is to put together a great look, and not blow your budget.

Welcome to Style_iish!

Here are some of the looks I've posted on Instagram so far (follow me @style_iish)

A fit and flare dress is super flattering; this one is from H&M, for $14.99!

I love wearing yellow, but I never want to pair it with black (the dreaded bumblebee look!), so grey is a great alternative!

Colorblocking is everywhere these days, purses, shoes... I love it on this dress because it creates a great shape!  I got this one from Dynamite for under $20!
